    Requirements

  1. Owners of motor vehicles with at least four wheels that are registered in Florida are required to carry valid PIP insurance. This policy must be delivered or issued for delivery by an insurance company licensed by the Florida Department of Financial Services.
  2. Coverage Limits

  3. According to Florida law, minimum coverage of $10,000 of personal injury protection and $10,000 of property damage liability (PDL) is required for all vehicle owners. Bodily injury liability insurance will pay for serious or permanent injury or death to others when the policy owner causes a crash with his automobile.
  4. Lapse in Coverage

  5. Vehicle owners who allow their PIP coverage to lapse risk suspension of all driving privileges, including suspension of vehicle license plates and registration. This suspension can stay in effect for up to three years or until proof of valid insurance is provided to the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. A reinstatement fee will be assessed.
  6. Commercial Drivers

  7. Commercial drivers such as self-employed limousine or taxi cab drivers must carry bodily injury liability coverage of $125,000 per person, $250,000 per occurrence and $50,000 for property damage liability.
  8. Exceptions

  9. Exceptions to Florida PIP requirements are provided to certain members of the military and college students. A current listing of these exemptions can be found on the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles website.
